Have the basics down but feel like your work isn’t quite where you want it to be? I can help you move forward.
I teach step-by-step watercolor courses designed for beginner and intermediate painters who want to paint with more confidence, clarity, and intention.
I've been fortunate to have won over 85 juried awards, including multiple First Place and Best of Show honors, and have been featured in national watercolor magazines and books.
But it took some trial and error to get there. If you’re reading this, chances are:
You understand basic washes and color mixing
You’re comfortable with your materials
Your paintings sometimes work… and sometimes don’t
You sense there’s a next level — but it’s hard to define
This is the stage where most watercolorists plateau.
It’s also the stage I enjoy teaching most!
I know how you feel...I've been there too.
This is what I've learned that's made all the difference:
How to design a painting intentionally
How to control values for impact
When to soften, sharpen, or lose edges
How to simplify without weakening the image
When to stop — and trust the result
These are the decisions that separate competent paintings from compelling ones.
In these courses, I focus on:
Strong composition and focal points
Value structure that supports the painting
Edge control and lost-and-found techniques
Color harmony and restraint
Editing and knowing when to stop
These skills will apply to every painting you create!
Here are some of the paintings we'll do together in these courses. Each is broken into lessons showing not only every brushstroke and technique, but the thought processes behind every decision. Why this color? What are the different approaches and why? How do I fix this mistake (happy accident?)

Allow me to introduce myself...
Yes, it's really my name - parents with a sense of humor!
My love of drawing began when I could hold a crayon - a yellow-green one I remember distinctly. Not only did it have a pleasing color, it tasted pretty good too.
I've been blessed to have my work published in American Artist magazine, SPLASH 11 and SPLASH 16, the Best of America Watercolor Artists. I achieved National Watercolor Society Signature Status in 2025, and have won over 85 awards including dozens of Best in Show and 1st Place awards.
However, my real joy has come from teaching watercolor workshops to hundreds of wonderful students over the last 19 years. I love to paint and create, and passing on what I've learned (and am learning) is extremely gratifying.
So, enough about me. As you'll hear me say in the courses... Alright, Let's Paint!
"I highly recommend Ted to anyone looking to grow as an artist. His passion, talent, and dedication have been a huge influence on my creative journey. I am forever grateful for his teaching."
"Ted is clear, concise, exciting, leading you on ever so gently but firmly to the next level to find and explore your own artistic vision.
Consider me your artist friend telling you that you have finally found the right workshop and you have found the key to your own creativity. Enjoy!!!!!"
"I have so much fun in Ted's classes, and always learn so much.
He clearly shows each step in his demos, and obviously loves painting watercolors. His teaching has encouraged me to be a better painter."
Text section
I’ve learned that most frustration doesn’t come from lack of talent.
It comes from not knowing what to do next, or why something isn’t working.
My teaching focuses on:
Clear steps
Strong fundamentals
And helping you finish paintings you’re proud of
You’ll gain skills you can apply to every painting, not just the one being demonstrated.
No pressure. No jargon. Just thoughtful instruction you can return to anytime.
There is so much here for you too.
Instead of spending countless hours practicing techniques to eventually be able to start painting, why not learn all those techniques AND paint a beautiful watercolor at the same time.
Each tutorial focuses on:
Painting a landscape, portrait, flower or wildlife
All the colors, brushes, and techniques you'll need
The decision-making process of each step, not just a cookie-cutter formula
Everything you need to create your own masterpieces!
My decades of painting and teaching have come together in these courses for one reason...to show you how to be the painter you always dreamed of being!
Even though these courses focus on moving your work forward, I explain every step along the way.
I don’t assume you already know something — I show you:
What I’m seeing and why I’m making each decision
How to correct problems before they escalate
My focus is always on building on successes (and failures) and moving forward with confidence.
Each course includes:
A complete painting from start to finish
Downloadable reference photos
Traceable outlines
Lifetime access so you can revisit the instruction as your skills grow
You can move at your own pace and return whenever you need clarity.
You’ll receive lifetime access to all current tutorials — over 25 hours of in-depth instruction — with a new tutorial added every month.
Each tutorial focuses on a complete painting from start to finish, with clear explanations of:
Composition and intent
Value planning and control
Color harmony and restraint
Edge decisions and simplification
Knowing when a painting is finished
These lessons are designed to help you develop skills you can apply to every painting you create.
This is one of the most valuable parts of the program.
As a member, you can email me images of your finished paintings for personal critique and guidance. I’ll help you see:
What’s working
What’s holding the painting back
Where to focus your efforts next
This kind of feedback is rarely available in online courses — and it makes a real difference.
You’ll never lose access.
You can revisit any lesson at any time, whether you’re actively painting or simply looking to refresh your thinking before starting something new.
As your skills evolve, the instruction will continue to meet you where you are.
A focused collection of foundational lessons that support everything taught in the advanced tutorials: Masking, Glazing, Composition, Lifting, Feathering Edges, and more.
These videos help ensure you’re approaching each painting with clarity and confidence.
I want you to feel completely comfortable joining.
If, within 30 days, you don’t feel the instruction is helping you move forward, just email me and I’ll refund your purchase — no questions asked.
I want to be clear and straightforward about the cost — and why it’s structured this way. And trust me, I've kept the price as low as I can.
Professional-level watercolor instruction, ongoing monthly content, and personal critique simply aren’t comparable to inexpensive beginner courses or subscription libraries.
This program is designed for painters who are serious about improving their work and value clear guidance, thoughtful instruction, and direct feedback.
If you were to purchase these tutorials individually — or seek personal critique through workshops or classes — the cost would be significantly higher.
Instead, I’ve chosen to make this a single, one-time investment that gives you:
Lifetime access to all current tutorials
Every new tutorial added monthly
Personal email critiques of your work
Access to the Watercolor Essentials library
A full 30-day money-back guarantee
Retail: Essentials: $250, 12 Tutorials: $720, 12 New Tutorials a Year: $720+ = $1,690+ value
No subscription.
No renewals.
No expiration.
Just ongoing access to professional watercolor instruction.
Many painters spend far more than this on a single in-person workshop
I stand behind the instruction! If, within 30 days, you don’t feel the courses are helping you move forward, simply email me and I’ll refund your purchase — no questions asked.
If you’re ready to slow down, think more intentionally, and paint with greater confidence, these tutorials were made for you.

Many painters find that the focus on composition, values, edges, and intentional decision-making directly improves their work for juried exhibitions.
While no course can guarantee awards or acceptance, the skills taught are the same ones jurors consistently respond to.
